Unique Student Identifier (USI)

Introduction

All VET students require a Unique Student Identifier (USI).

What is a USI?

A USI is your individual education number for life. It gives you an online record of your vocational education and training courses and/or university courses undertaken in Australia.

Do students have to provide a USI?

Yes, a USI is required by all VET students. Students who do not provide a USI, will not be able to access a VET course.

What are acceptable forms of identification to create a USI?

You will need a valid form of ID to create your USI. A valid form of ID may include:

- Australian passport
- non-Australian passport (with Australian Visa)
- Australian birth certificate
  Please note a Birth Certificate extract or Commemorative Birth Certificate will not verify
- Australian driver’s licence
- Medicare card
- certificate of registration by descent
- Centrelink concession card
- citizenship certificate
- ImmiCard

Creating a USI

Getting a USI is quick, easy and free. Follow the steps below to create your USI:

1. Have a valid form of identification (ID) ready.
2. Go to the USI Registry System: https://www.usi.gov.au/students/get-a-usi
3. Agree to the terms and conditions (if you have previously agreed to the terms and conditions, you might not see this step).
4. Select Create USI.
5. Select your evidence of identity (ID) document (see the types of ID you can use). Please ensure the name on your ID document that you use to create your USI, matches your name on NESA, otherwise, Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) won’t be able to verify your identity.
6. Enter your personal details exactly as they appear on your form of ID.
  If the name you use for business or official purposes is not the name on your form of ID, you can choose to enter this in the preferred name field.
7. Enter your contact details, including at least two contact methods.
8. Confirm your identity. The USI Registry System will check and confirm your identity using the ‘Documentation Verification Service’ (DVS).
9. Secure your account with a USI password and check questions. You will need to select a couple of secret questions, please ensure you select ones that are relevant to you, so that you can recall the answers easily.

Submitting Your USI?

Once your USI has been successfully created, complete the following Google Form and submit your response to notify Sydney Catholic Schools of your USI:
