 Course Description

Salon Assistants are employed to assist in the running of hairdressing salons and perform general duties such as:

      • welcoming clients
      • greeting and preparing clients for salon services
      • shampooing and drying hair to shape
      • conducting salon financial transactions
      • making appointments
      • undertaking general housekeeping and cleaning duties to keep the salon tidy.

This course is a pre-vocational preparatory course designed to help students get the entry-level, practical skills and experience needed to work as a Salon Assistant.

On successful completion of this course, you will have the skills and experience you need to seek employment as a Salon Assistant, or begin further study towards becoming a qualified Hairdresser. You may like to explore your options for gaining an Apprenticeship or go on to study SHB30416 – Certificate III in Hairdressing.

Exclusions are:

      • Barbering
      • Beauty Services (Make-Up) 360-hour course
      • Beauty Services (Nail Technology)
      • Beauty Services (Retail Cosmetics)
      • Hairdressing School-based Apprenticeship
      • Retail (Certificate II)

 Units of Competency

Core units include:

  • BSBWHS201 Contribute to health and safety of self and others
  • SHBXIND001 Comply with organisational requirements within a personal services environment
  • SHBXIND002 Communicate as part of a salon team
  • SHBHIND001 Maintain and organise tools, equipment and work areas
  • SHBHDES001 Dry hair to shape
  • SHBXCCS003 Greet and prepare clients for salon services
  • SHBHBAS001 Provide shampoo and basin services
  • SHBXCCS001 Conduct salon financial transactions

 Work Placement

Students are required to participate in a minimum of 35 hours of work placement.

 Eligibility for Qualification

Nationally Registered Training LogoThis qualification requires 12 units, comprised of 8 core units and 4 elective units. 

Students assessed as fulfilling the requirements for all the units of competency in the course will be eligible for the Certificate III in Salon Assistant. 

Students achieving at least one unit of competency will be eligible for an AQF Statement of Attainment showing partial completion of their qualification.
